Seismic Phase Two Project Environmental Services

Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratories

As part of its on-going mission, the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (LBNL) strives to provide seismically safe, state of the art facilities to support its unique research needs. In support of this mission, LBNL is completing Phase 2 of a four-part seismic safety project; Phase 2 includes seismic and operating system upgrades to two existing buildings and construction of a new General Purpose Lab/Office Building, accommodating functions currently served among five older buildings that will be demolished as part of the project. DC&E is completing a combined Initial Study/Environmental Assessment (IS/EA) for the project to satisfy the requirements of both the California Environmental Quality Act (CEQA) and the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA). In completing the IS/EA, DC&E is responsible for reviewing and incorporating relevant data and conclusions presented in the Lab’s 2007 Long Range Development Plan EIR. The key issues of concern relate primarily to construction of the new General Purpose Lab/Office and include aesthetics, biological resources, and hydrology and water quality.
