Hans Schiller Plaza

Trust for Public Land

Residents of Visitacion Valley, a vibrant urban neighborhood in the City of San Francisco, wanted to convert a former utility right-of-way into a multi-use and multi-cultural Gateway Plaza to their new community greenway. In collaboration with stakeholders, WMA developed a landscape design that includes a plaza for public markets and events, a butterfly garden and community demonstration gardens. The design incorporates work by neighborhood artists in such features as gates, walls and a covered pergola. WMA successfully structured the design process to meet the needs of diverse interests and cultures, and to complete the project within a limited budget and timeline.
