Strawberry Creek Park

City of Berkeley

Originally retained to design a linear park on an abandoned railroad freight yard, WMA took an existing concrete culvert and created a fully restored creek. Strawberry Creek was uncovered, or daylighted,' and now follows its historic meander. Completed in 1983, this award-winning park design was one of the first daylighting projects in the country.

The design for Strawberry Creek Park incorporates ball courts, picnic facilities and a children's play area. A limited budget inspired creative solutions such as recycling and re-using materials including the demolished yard's paving and the soil from the creek excavation. Additionally, a drought-tolerant planting palette reduced the need for irrigation and maintenance. This natural resource is now the centerpiece of the neighborhood. This project won the National ASLA Merit Award in 1995.
