Lake Merritt Bird Islands Habitat Enhancement Project
City of Oakland, as a subconsultant to Moffatt & Nichol
DC&E is assisting in the development of a plan to improve the habitat conditions on three islands located at the south end of Lake Merritt in downtown Oakland. The islands are used by a diverse group of bird species, including cormorants, night-herons and egrets. As part of the project, DC&E is working with biologists to recommend improvements to existing vegetation, including management of invasive species, as well as the replanting of tree species used for nesting. The project will include assessing the potential for a demonstration marsh area, pedestrian path and improvements to a viewing area, which would allow users opportunities to view and learn about the local marsh vegetation and bird species from the shoreline.
