Area Two Concept Plan

City of Newark

DC&E led a planning effort to coordinate development around a planned rail station along the Dumbarton Rail Corridor in Newark, which will connect the East Bay with San Mateo County. The project area consisted of several brownfield sites that were historically occupied by industrial operations, and are controlled by five separate property owners. The Concept Plan included a pedestrian-friendly street pattern, with open spaces and parks relating to the Bay front site, and a performing arts center and public gathering space sited near the rail station. The Concept Plan also showed how the burden of cleanup of hazardous materials, infrastructure improvements and other costs can be shared equitably among all property owners. The Concept Plan was approved by the Newark City Council as the guiding vision for this new transit-oriented neighborhood.
