Sustainable Transit Communities Study
City of Los Angeles and Southern California Association of Governments (SCAG)
With 60 rail and bus rapid transit stations, the City of Los Angeles is quickly emerging as a national leader not only in public transit but also in transit-oriented development, or TOD—what Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa has often called “elegant density.” The City of Los Angeles has already competed TOD studies in ten station areas; DC&E is now preparing a study that will examine the potential for additional transit-oriented development at the remaining fifty stations. The study will establish a detailed set of criteria defining the components of a “Sustainable Transit Community,” a neighborhood around a transit station that encourages and supports transit ridership. DC&E will then apply these criteria to all 50 stations, identifying those with the greatest future potential. Additionally, the DC&E team will identify potential funding sources to support redevelopment, and will develop marketing materials to publicize the Sustainable Transit Communities concept city-wide.
