Laytonville Traffic Calming and Downtown Revitalization:

Planning for a Livable Community

Mendocino Council of Governments

Laytonville is an unincorporated rural community located in the coastal mountains of Northern Mendocino County. With the construction of the Highway 101 bypass around Downtown Willits to the south, scheduled to begin in 2010, Laytonville will become one of only two downtowns located directly on Highway 101 between the San Francisco Bay Area and Eureka. This presents the community with both significant opportunities and concerns. DC&E worked with a team of subconsultants, the Mendocino Council of Governments (MCOG), Caltrans District 1, and, most importantly, Native American, Hispanic and other long-time residents, to develop a shared vision for improvements to Highway 101 through Laytonville’s downtown. This vision was the result of an intensive five-day charrette focused on economic vitality, pedestrian and bicyclist safety, enhancing Downtown’s unique rural character, and meeting both local and regional needs.
