A New Paradigm for Multimodal Transportation Facilities
The National Academy of Sciences Transit Cooperative Research Programs, as a subconsultant to Dowling Associates Inc
DC&E is part of a consultant team identifying opportunities to develop a new paradigm for multimodal transportation facilities that can address the shortcomings of the interstate system while building and improving on its strengths. The research will begin by identifying successful (and unsuccessful) multimodal highway corridors, both within the United States and internationally, and will develop typologies that describe high-functioning multimodal systems and their surrounding corridors. These typologies will be applied to freeway corridors around the United States to identify places where new paradigm facilities are feasible. Further research will identify the significant barriers to the wide application of the new paradigm multimodal facilities and develop recommendations for overcoming these impediments. DC&E is developing a set of conceptual illustrations of new paradigm facilities to educate transportation professionals, policymakers and the general public about the new paradigm..
