Bay Street Streetscape Improvements
City of Fremont
Bay Street is characterized by a series of 1950's style single-family homes which have been converted to commercial uses. An overall concept for Bay Street envisions a more vibrant and pedestrian-friendly retail corridor in Irvington that builds on the scale and character of existing buildings. A utilities undergrounding project on Bay Street provided the City of Fremont with the opportunity to implement streetscape improvements and possibly revitalize the existing commercial street. Site and facade improvements should produce a more unified character. DC&E developed a conceptual design plan that includes street trees; additional on-street parking; wider sidewalks on the south side and bulb-outs to slow traffic and facilitate a safer pedestrian environment. In addition, a future concept for private redevelopment was envisioned with zero-foot setbacks and two-story multi-use buildings. DC&E's plans for the Bay Street Streetscape Improvements led to a grant from the Metropolitan Transportation Commission for implementation and construction.
