Pueblo Viejo Concept Plan

City of Coachella

Originally settled in the late 1800’s, the City of Coachella has a strong agricultural and railroad heritage. Today, Coachella is one of the fastest-growing cities in California and has experienced explosive single family suburban development over the past few decades. As the city grows, its history and multi-cultural heritage become increasingly important aspects of the community’s identity. In particular, the City is working to preserve and revitalize its historic downtown neighborhood. To this end, DC&E worked with the City and community members to develop the Pueblo Viejo Concept Plan. The Plan includes a series of design and business improvement strategies to revitalize the Pueblo Viejo, or Old Town, area. These strategies will facilitate revitalization and enhancement of the downtown’s pedestrian-friendly shopping, dining and entertainment opportunities. In order to identify community priorities and needs, DC&E facilitated bilingual workshops and stakeholder interviews with property owners, local merchants, City staff, school district members, community groups and local residents. Based on that input, the DC&E team developed design guidelines, business development and recruitment strategies, recommendations for historic preservation, and specific implementation actions.
